MCI New Secretary General

Dr. Rakesh Vats has been appointed the new Secretary-General Medical Council of India for over a period of 1 Year. He is an Indian administrative officer with the background of a medical doctor before joining the Indian administrative service. His tenure is for a period of 1 year and he is also responsible to work in consultation with the National medical commission.


MCI has been established under the act of parliament and was working as an independent body. It was also working under consultation from the ministry of health and family welfare government of India. MCI was established in 1934 MCI was the supreme controlling body of medical education and provided the guideline for medical education-related services. The main function of MCI was as Under.


Objectives of Medical Council of India:


  1. TO Maintain uniform standards of medical education throughout the country for both UG and PG courses.
  2. To inspect all the medical collages either govt or private to see that the standard regarding infrastructure, faculties and other basic requirements were maintained properly.
  3. It also had the power to recognized/derecognized any medical college based on the inspection report which was conducted annually.
  4. Based on the inspection and report medical colleges were permitted to increase the number of medical admission seats.
  5. It also issued the eligibility certificate for Indian students going abroad to Study MBBS  and also allowed those who qualify the NEET exam to Study abroad. 
  6. It was also responsible to oversee different exams conducted for doctors for their degrees and promotions 
  7. MCI also revied the ongoing process of medical studies in different countries where Indian students are studying.
  8. It was also responsible to coordinate with the higher medical studies abroad and to bring and maintain them in India to improve the standard of medical education.
